Mayu Watanabe's Biography
2007–2009
In 2006, Watanabe was chosen out of 13,000 applicants to become a member of the Japanese idol group AKB48.
She has been selected as the selection member since the 4th single "BINGO!" (2007).
According to June 15, 2011 episode of AKB's variety show, AKBingo. Watanabe's nickname "Mayuyu" and Team 4's Shimazaki Haruka's nickname "Paruru" were both originated by former teammate Rumi Yonezawa.
Watanabe placed 4th in the 13th single members selection which took place in the end of June — beginning of July, 2009.
2010
Watanabe ranked 5th in the 17th Single Senbatsu Election.
At the end of October, 2010, Watanabe appeared on the cover of the December issue of UP to boy magazine together with Airi Suzuki from Cute. That was the first gravure collaboration between Hello! Project and AKB48.
2011
In the preliminary results of the 3rd Senbatsu Election, announced on May 25, Mayu Watanabe was in the 5th place.
On June 8, at the 3rd Senbatsu Election ceremony, held at Nippon Budokan, it was announced that Mayu Watanabe placed 5th, thereby maintaining her position from the previous senbatsu election.
2012
In 2012, Watanabe starred in her first lead role in the Japanese TV drama Sabadol. She played a 38-year-old high school teacher who is hated by her pupils whilst having a hidden life as an idol.
Watanabe released her debut solo single, "Synchro Tokimeki", on February 29 (on the Sony Music Records label), which was the theme song to the TV drama of the same name. The ending theme, sung in an enka style, was one of the B-sides. "Synchro Tokimeki" reached number 1 on the Oricon daily charts, however, only achieved 2nd place on the weekly charts despite selling 123,237 copies, only 2,938 copies short of the first place single.
In support of her debut single, she hosted her first solo live event, performing three songs in front of a total of 10,000 people on March 20.
Watanabe is a voice actress for the anime series AKB0048. and is a member of the sub-group "No Name" who sing the opening and ending themes for the series.
In March 2012, Watanabe graduated from high school.
On June 6, 2012, Watanabe ranked 2nd at the AKB48 27th Single Senbatsu Election with 72,574 votes.
It was announced on June 19, 2012 that Watanabe's second single, "Otona Jelly Beans", (on Sony Music Records), would be released on July 25, 2012.[12]
On August 24, 2012, the first day of the Tokyo Dome concert series, a big AKB48 teams' rearrangement was announced, in which Mayu Watanabe was transferred from Team B to Team A.
